Subspecies
Geographical variation is complex, and many subspecies possibly no more than clinal forms. A taxonomic review is needed.

Proposed subspecies huilensis (southern Angola) synonymized with smithersi. Northern population of nominate subspecies recently split as subspecies vulpiniceps, supposedly having redder crown, less streaked upperparts and whiter underparts in non-breeding plumage, but not widely accepted.

The following 17 subspecies are recognised:

  • simplex (Heuglin, 1869)   -  Southern Sudan, north-eastern DRCongo and northern Uganda.
  • fortis Lynes, 1930   -  South-eastern Gabon, PRCongo and southern DRCongo south to north-central Angola and Zambia (except south-western and east).
