Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Subspecies
Geographical variation is complex, and many subspecies possibly no more than clinal forms. A taxonomic review is needed.
Proposed subspecies huilensis (southern Angola) synonymized with smithersi . Northern population of nominate subspecies recently split as subspecies vulpiniceps , supposedly having redder crown, less streaked upperparts and whiter underparts in non-breeding plumage, but not widely accepted.
The following 17 subspecies are recognised:
simplex (Heuglin, 1869) - Southern Sudan, north-eastern DRCongo and northern Uganda.
fortis Lynes, 1930 - South-eastern Gabon, PRCongo and southern DRCongo south to north-central Angola and Zambia (except south-western and east).
fricki Mearns, 1913 - Southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya.
humilis Madarász, 1904 - Highlands of eastern Uganda and western Kenya.
ukamba Lynes, 1930 - Highlands of central Kenya and northern Tanzania.
heterophrys Oberholser, 1906 - Coastal Kenya and northern Tanzania.
victoria Lynes, 1930 - South-western Kenya and northern Tanzania (area around L Victoria).
fischeri Reichenow, 1891 - North-central Tanzania.
keithi Parkes, 1987 - South-central Tanzania.
mbeya Parkes, 1987 - Southern Tanzania.
emendatus Vincent, 1944 - South-eastern Tanzania, Malawi and northern Mozambique.
procerus Peters, W, 1868 - Eastern Zambia, southern Malawi and central Mozambique.
bensoni Traylor, 1964 - Southern Zambia.
smithersi Hall, BP, 1956 - Southern Angola, extreme northern Namibia, north-western Botswana, and extreme south-western Zambia and western Zimbabwe.
chiniana (Smith, 1843) - Zimbabwe, interior southern Mozambique, south-eastern Botswana and South African plateau.
frater Reichenow, 1916 - Central Namibia.
campestris Gould, 1845 - Coastal plain of southern Mozambique, Swaziland and eastern South Africa.
