Subspecies
Subspecies are geographically variable in both morphology and voice; haynaldi in particular seems well differentiated, and has previously been placed with Zamboanga Bulbul (Hypsipetes rufigularis).
Proposed subspecies samarensis (from Samar) indistinguishable from nominate, and considered better synonymized with it.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
everetti (Tweeddale, 1877) - East-central and south-eastern Philippines (Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Panaon, Dinagat, Siargao, Bucas, western and central Mindanao).
catarmanensis Rand & Rabor, 1969 - Camiguin Sur, in south-central Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Camiguin Bulbul (Hypsipetes catarmanensis).
haynaldi (Blasius, W, 1890) - South-western Philippines (Jolo, Tawi-Tawi, Sanga Sanga, Bongao). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sulu Bulbul (Hypsipetes haynaldi).
samarensis Rand & Rabor, 1959 - Philippines (Samar and Leyte).
