Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp, peatswamp and kerangas forest. From sea-level - 600 m.

Brunei Darussalam (B) (NB), Indonesia (B) (NB), Malaysia (B) (NB), Myanmar (B) (NB), Singapore (E) (B) (NB), Thailand (B) (NB).

Usually singly or in pairs. Sometimes joins mixed feeding flocks.

Subspecies
Putative subspecies (caniceps, rufocaudatus, cantori) merged with nominate. Subspecies medius (described from Long Petah, in eastern Borneo) considered indistinguishable from sulphuratus.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • phaeocephalus (Hartlaub, 1844)   -  Extreme southern Myanmar (extreme southern Tenasserim), southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and Sumatra (including Bangka, Belitung, Siberut and Sipura).
  • connectens Chasen & Kloss, 1929   -  North-eastern Borneo.
  • sulphuratus (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Central Borneo (eastern Sarawak and western Sabah south to south-eastern Kalimantan).
  • diardi (Finsch, 1867)   -  Western Borneo (southern from R Baram).
