Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp, peatswamp and kerangas forest. From sea-level - 600 m.

Subspecies
Putative subspecies (caniceps, rufocaudatus, cantori) merged with nominate. Subspecies medius (described from Long Petah, in eastern Borneo) considered indistinguishable from sulphuratus.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

phaeocephalus (Hartlaub, 1844) - Extreme southern Myanmar (extreme southern Tenasserim), southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and Sumatra (including Bangka, Belitung, Siberut and Sipura).
connectens Chasen & Kloss, 1929 - North-eastern Borneo.
sulphuratus (Bonaparte, 1850) - Central Borneo (eastern Sarawak and western Sabah south to south-eastern Kalimantan).
diardi (Finsch, 1867) - Western Borneo (southern from R Baram).
