Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Western Bearded Greenbul (Criniger barbatus), and often considered conspecific. Subspecies ansorgeanus of Western Bearded Greenbul (Criniger barbatus) is morphologically and geographically intermediate between nominate subspecies of that species and present species and could arguably be considered a subspecies of the current species.
Proposed subspecies weileri (from Ituri, in north-eastern DRCongo) described on basis of somewhat darker overall coloration, but not satisfactorily distinguishable, as variation not constant.
