Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Eastern Bearded Greenbul (Criniger chloronotus), and often considered conspecific, but exhibits appreciable vocal as well as plumage differences. Subspecies ansorgeanus is morphologically and geographically intermediate between nominate subspecies and Eastern Bearded Greenbul (Criniger chloronotus) and could perhaps be considered a subspecies of Eastern Bearded Greenbul (Criniger chloronotus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
barbatus (Temminck, 1821) - Sierra Leone and south-eastern Guinea east to south-western Togo and southern Benin.
