Subspecies
No subspecies.
Has been suggested that it forms a superspecies with Baumann's Greenbul (Phyllastrephus baumanni), Toro Olive Greenbul (Phyllastrephus hypochloris) and Cameroon Olive Greenbul (Phyllastrephus poensis), but affinities with these seem remote. Relationship with Icterine Greenbul (Phyllastrephus icterinus) requires analysis as the two are almost entirely sympatric, closely similar in structure, overlap in dimensions, and appear also to intergrade in crown colour; possibly a melanistic form of that species.
Notes
Phyllastrephus lorenzi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) is considered a synonym of Phyllastrephus icterinus following Fishpool (2006).
