Scattered localities across central and southern Kenya, northern and eastern Tanzania, extreme south-eastern DRCongo, northern and central Zambia, extreme eastern Angola, much of Malawi and parts of northern Mozambique.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pale-olive Greenbul (Phyllastrephus fulviventris). Birds from south-eastern DRCongo described as subspecies schoutedeni on basis of darker and greyer underparts and less rufous tail feathers, but considered not satisfactorily distinguishable.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
schoutedeni Prigogine, 1969 - Central Kenya to central Mozambique, Zambia and eastern Angola.
cerviniventris Shelley, 1894 - Southern Kenya to Tanzania, Zambia, southern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi and Mozambique.
