Subspecies
Genus formerly submerged in Pycnonotus. May be most closely related to Grey Greenbul (Eurillas gracilis) and Ansorge's Greenbul (Eurillas ansorgei). Similarities to both in appearance and behaviour have resulted in much confusion in the field, historically and currently, which has obscured its status. It has recently been suggested that vocal differences between the two subspecies, and the fact that leoninus does not react to playback of song of nominate, may imply that they are isolated at the species level.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
leonina (Bates, 1930) - Sierra Leone and south-eastern Guinea east to central Ghana.
curvirostris (Cassin, 1860) - Central Ghana east, including Bioko I, to southern Sudan and western Kenya, south to northern and north-western Angola and southern DRCongo.
