Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest.
Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Laos (B), Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam.

Subspecies
Validity of subspecies paulus dubious, as features seem to fall within range of variation of nominate. Putative subspecies arctus (north-eastern India) lacks constant differences and is merged with nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- striatus (Blyth, 1842) - Himalayas in central Nepal, Bhutan and north-eastern India (Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, north-eastern Arunachal Pradesh, hills of Meghalaya, Assam and Nagaland south to Mizoram).
- paulus (Bangs & Phillips, JC, 1914) - Much of Myanmar (south to northern Tenasserim), southern China (Yunnan south of Likiang Range), mountains of western and northern Thailand, northern Laos and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin).
- arctus Ripley, 1948 - North-eastern Assam (Mishmi Hills).
