Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Collared Finchbill (Spizixos semitorques). Subspecies ingrami only doubtfully distinct, as differences seem to fall entirely within range of variation of nominate.
Proposed subspecies nobilis (Assam, in north-eastern India) and laotianus (Laos) considered too poorly differentiated to warrant recognition, and thus merged in, respectively, nominate and ingrami.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
canifrons Blyth, 1845 - North-eastern India (Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, possibly also north-eastern Arunachal Pradesh) and western Myanmar.
ingrami Bangs & Phillips, JC, 1914 - Eastern Myanmar, southern China (south-western Sichuan, north, western and southern Yunnan), north-western Thailand, northern Laos and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin).
