Subspecies
Subspecies berlepschi may represent a separate species. Some specimens from north-eastern Bolivia (eastern Beni) asserted to be of subspecies berlepschi, but this location nearly 1000 km west of nearest confirmed records. Further study is required.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • berlepschi Hellmayr, 1901   -  Central Brazil (southern Maranhío to southern Mato Grosso, south-central and eastern Goiás and southern Minas Gerais).
  • saturata Todd, 1946   -  Highlands of Bolivia (southern Cochabamba, east-central Santa Cruz).
  • dumicola (Vieillot, 1817)   -  Eastern Bolivia (Beni, Santa Cruz and south-western Cochabamba south through Tarija), Paraguay and southern Brazil (central Mato Grosso do Sul) south to eastern Argentina (eastern Jujuy and eastern Salta south to northern and eastern Córdoba and northern Buenos Aires) and Uruguay.
