Southern Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul and southern Espírito Santo to northern Rio Grande do Sul), south-eastern Paraguay (eastern Alto Paraná) and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones, northern Corrientes).

Habitat destruction and degradation through agricultural conversion and deforestation for mining and plantation production, urbanisation, industrialisation, agricultural expansion, colonisation and associated road-building, are the main threats.

Possibly forms a superspecies with Tropical Gnatcatcher (Polioptila plumbea), and some earlier suggestions are that they may be conspecific.
