Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 750 m, occasionally 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Rarity Status

Subspecies
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • semitorquatus (Lawrence, 1862)   -  Caribbean slope from Costa Rica to extreme north-western Colombia (Gulf of Urabá), and Pacific slope of central Panama (Panamá Province).
  • cinereiventris (Sclater, 1855)   -  From south-eastern Panama (Darién) southern along Pacific coast to south-western Ecuador.
  • albapiculus Olson, 1980   -  Northern Colombia (northern Antioquia).
  • magdalenae Chapman, 1915   -  Magdalena Valley, in northern Colombia (Bolí­var, eastern Antioquia, northern Santander).
  • unicus Olson, 1980   -  Cundinamarca, in west-central Colombia.
  • hormotus Olson, 1980   -  East of Andes, from southern Colombia (south-eastern Nariño, western Putumayo) south to Ecuador and northern Peru (northern Amazonas).
  • peruvianus Chapman, 1923   -  Peru east of Andes (from Amazonas south, evidently discontinuously, to northern Puno), and western Bolivia.
