Habitat
Fast flowing streams in primary lowland dipterocarp forest.

Shy, restless and easily disturbed. When disturbed flies out of view uttering a loud call.

Nest
Cup-shaped, composed of woven fibers near a streambank, usually between boulders or tree-roots.

Eggs (Guide)
2; white with reddish-brown spots.

Subspecies
Subspecies borneensis of some taxonomic interest, although morphologically not very distinct; perhaps merits a combined genetic, behavioural and morphological study.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • indicus Hartert, 1910   -  Eastern Himalayas east to Myanmar, southern China (Yunnan), west, northern and eastern Thailand and Indochina.
  • sinensis Gould, 1866   -  Southern and eastern China (eastern from extreme eastern Qinghai and western Sichuan), including Hainan I.
  • frontalis Blyth, 1847   -  Central and southern Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Nias I, and lowland Borneo.
  • borneensis (Sharpe, 1889)   -  Highland Borneo.
  • chaseni Meyer de Schauensee, 1940   -  Batu Is, off western Sumatra.
  • leschenaulti (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Java and Bali.


Similar Species
Bornean Forktail (Enicurus borneensis) which is larger and has a longer tail, and white on crown does not extend as far back.
