Subspecies
Subspecies borneensis of some taxonomic interest, although morphologically not very distinct; perhaps merits a combined genetic, behavioural and morphological study.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
indicus Hartert, 1910 - Eastern Himalayas east to Myanmar, southern China (Yunnan), west, northern and eastern Thailand and Indochina.
sinensis Gould, 1866 - Southern and eastern China (eastern from extreme eastern Qinghai and western Sichuan), including Hainan I.
frontalis Blyth, 1847 - Central and southern Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Nias I, and lowland Borneo.
borneensis (Sharpe, 1889) - Highland Borneo.
chaseni Meyer de Schauensee, 1940 - Batu Is, off western Sumatra.
leschenaulti (Vieillot, 1818) - Java and Bali.
Similar Species
Bornean Forktail (Enicurus borneensis) which is larger and has a longer tail, and white on crown does not extend as far back.
