North-western Himalayas east to Bhutan, and central China (eastern Qinghai and south-western Gansu south to northern Yunnan); highland movements as far southern as northern Myanmar in winter.

Position within turdine clade unclear. Highly distinctive, and has been proposed that it merits placement in its own family, Grandalidae. Earlier suggestion of relationship with Sialia now considered very improbable.
