Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat loss through logging and conversion for agriculture are the main threats.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • albiventer Junge, 1933   -  Sumatra.
  • rufifrons Wallace, 1865   -  Western Borneo.
  • caerulatus (Bonaparte, 1857)   -  Northern, eastern and southern Borneo.


Similar Species
Male Mangrove Blue-Flycatcher (Cyornis rufigastra) is similar, but lacks the contrasting pale forehead and supercilium and is duller on the lower back and rump. Female is blue above with whitish loral spot.
