Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
sapphira (Blyth, 1843) - Eastern Himalayas from eastern Nepal east to southern China (south-eastern Xizang east to Sichuan and northern Yunnan), north-eastern India (south to southern Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram) and northern Myanmar.
laotiana (Delacour & Greenway, 1939) - Southern China (western Yunnan), northern and central Laos and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin). Non-breeding also north-western Thailand.
tienchuanensis Cheng, 1964 - North-central China (southern Gansu, southern Shaanxi and west-central and southern Sichuan).
