Subspecies
Affinities uncertain. Sometimes thought to form a superspecies with Rufous-chested Flycatcher (Ficedula dumetoria) and Rufous-throated Flycatcher (Ficedula rufigula), with which it shares the character of a bright blue eyelid.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

buruensis (Hartert, 1899) - Buru, in southern Moluccas.
ceramensis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1910) - Seram, in southern Moluccas.
siebersi (Hartert, 1924) - Kai Is (Kai Besar).
