Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical and tropical dry shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigrorum (Collin, A & Hartert, 1927)   -  South-eastern Guinea (Macenta area), Sierra Leone, Liberia, south-western Ivory Coast, southern Ghana and south-western Togo (Misahöhe).
  • brevicauda Ogilvie-Grant, 1907   -  Northern Benin (Pendjari National Park), possibly extreme eastern Burkina Faso, and southern Nigeria and southern Cameroon east to southern Sudan, southern and western Uganda and western Kenya (Kakamega), south to north-western Angola (south to Cuanza Sul) and southern DRCongo.
  • cinereola Hartlaub & Finsch, 1870   -  Southern Somalia, Kenya (east of Rift) and eastern Tanzania.
  • impavida Clancey, 1957   -  Central and south-western Angola (Lunda Norte south to Huí­la, Namibe and Cunene) east to southern DRCongo (Shaba), western Tanzania and northern Mozambique, south to northern Namibia (including Caprivi), northern Botswana, and Zimbabwe (except south-east).
  • vulturna Clancey, 1957   -  Southern Malawi, central Mozambique (south to R Limpopo), south-eastern Zimbabwe, northern South Africa (Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces) and northern Swaziland.
  • caerulescens (Hartlaub, 1865)   -  Southern Mozambique, southern Swaziland, and eastern South Africa (northern KwaZulu-Natal south to R Great Fish, in eastern Cape Province).
