Subspecies
Birds from Sudan and Uganda described as subspecies stuhlmani, but considered indistinguishable from nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

aximensis (Sclater, WL, 1924) - Sierra Leone, Liberia, south-eastern Guinea, southern Ivory Coast, southern Ghana, southern Togo and southern Nigeria.
camerunensis (Reichenow, 1892) - Mt Cameroon, in south-western Cameroon.
comitatus (Cassin, 1857) - Southern Cameroon and southern Central African Republic east to extreme south-western Sudan (Aloma Plateau) and south-western Uganda, south to Gabon, PRCongo, north-western Angola (Cabinda, Cuanza Norte), south-central and eastern DRCongo and Burundi.
