Subspecies
Putative subspecies ruandae (described from Uganda) is slightly longer-winged than infulata but otherwise inseparable. More appropriately synonymized with infulata.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • aquatica Heuglin, 1864   -  Extreme southern Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, southern and eastern Mali, south-eastern Burkina Faso, central and eastern Ivory Coast and central and eastern Ghana east to Nigeria (except southern and extreme north), northern Cameroon, southern Chad, northern Central African Republic, south-western Sudan and northern DRCongo (Ubangui).
  • infulata Hartlaub, 1881   -  South-eastern Sudan, north-eastern DRCongo (including R Lualaba from Kasongo to Mwanza), Uganda (except Karamoja), Rwanda, western Burundi, western Kenya, north-western Tanzania and north-eastern Zambia.
  • lualabae (Chapin, 1932)   -  South-eastern DRCongo (upper Lualaba lakes, in Katanga).
  • grimwoodi Chapin, 1952   -  Southern Zambia (L Suye, Lukanga Swamp).
