Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, dry forest, dry savanna, plantations. From sea-level - 1,800 m.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Southern Black-flycatcher (Melaenornis pammelaina ).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
edolioides (Swainson, 1837) - Extreme southern Mauritania (Assaba to R Senegal), southern Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, northern and eastern Guinea, western and south-western Mali (including along R Niger from Mopti to Bamako), northern Ivory Coast and southern Burkina Faso east to extreme south-western Niger, Nigeria (except extreme northern and south) and western Cameroon.
lugubris (von Müller, JW, 1851) - Eastern Cameroon, southern Chad, northern and central Central African Republic, southern and south-western Sudan, north-eastern DRCongo, and from western Eritrea and western Ethiopia south to Uganda, western Kenya and northern Tanzania.
schistaceus Sharpe, 1895 - Northern and eastern Ethiopia and northern Kenya.
