Subspecies
Genus often merged with Melaenornis. Morphologically distinctive subspecies pumilus has been regarded as a separate species, sometimes with neumanni as a subspecies.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
pumilus (Sharpe, 1895) - Central Ethiopia and northern Somalia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ethiopian Grey Flycatcher (Agricola pumilus).
neumanni (Hilgert, 1908) - Southern Sudan, southern Ethiopia, northern Kenya and central Somalia.
burae (Traylor, 1970) - South-eastern Somalia and eastern Kenya.
microrhynchus (Reichenow, 1887) - South-western Kenya and north, central and western Tanzania.
taruensis (van Someren, 1921) - South-eastern Kenya.
