Subspecies
Rufous Flycatcher-Thrush (Stizorhina fraseri) and Finsch's Flycatcher-Thrush (Stizorhina finschii) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped as fraseri and moved from genus Neocossyphus to the genus Stizorhina following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Some authors consider Finsch's Flycatcher-Thrush (Stizorhina finschii) to be a subspecies of Rufous Flycatcher-Thrush (Stizorhina fraseri).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • fraseri (Strickland, 1844)   -  Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
  • rubicunda (Hartlaub, 1860)   -  South-eastern Nigeria east to northern DRCongo, south to Angola and north-western Zambia.
  • vulpina Reichenow, 1902   -  South-western South Sudan, north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda.
  • finschii (Sharpe, 1870)   -  Lowlands of Sierra Leone and Liberia to Ghana and southern Nigeria. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Finsch's Flycatcher-Thrush (Stizorhina finschii).
