Subspecies
West African Batis (Batis occulta) and Bioko Batis (Batis poensis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include occulta as a subspecies of Bioko Batis (Batis poensis).

Possibly forms a superspecies with Angola Batis (Batis minulla). Subspecies occulta sometimes considered a separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

occulta Lawson, 1984 - Humid forests of Sierra Leone to southern Cameroon and Gabon.
poensis Alexander, 1903 - Bioko I (Fernando P�o).
