Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From sea-level - 2,300 m.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda (B) (NB), Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Subspecies
Many-coloured Bush-Shrike (Chlorophoneus multicolor) and Black-fronted Bush-Shrike (Chlorophoneus nigrifrons) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species within Telophorus contra (Dowsett and Forbes-Watson 1993) who include nigrifrons as a subspecies of multicolor in the genus Malaconotus.

Genus sometimes subsumed in Malaconotus or in Chlorophoneus. Has also been placed also in genus Laniarius. Forms a superspecies with Many-coloured Bush-Shrike (Chlorophoneus multicolor) and possibly conspecific with it. Occurs in five main colour morphs.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigrifrons (Reichenow, 1896)   -  Mountains of eastern Uganda (Mt Elgon), Kenya, Tanzania and northern Malawi.
  • manningi (Shelley, 1899)   -  Eastern Angola, south-eastern DRCongo (Katanga) and northern Zambia.
  • sandgroundi Bangs, 1931   -  Southern Malawi, Mozambique, eastern Zimbabwe and northern South Africa (Limpopo Province).
