Habitat
Papyrus swamps and beds, in meandering river valleys and along lake-shores. From 1,100 - 1,600 m.

Range (Guide)
Burundi (B) (NB), Congo [The Democratic Republic of the] (B) (NB), Kenya (B) (NB), Rwanda (B) (NB), Tanzania [United Republic of] (B) (NB), Uganda (B) (NB).

Western and southern Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, extreme eastern DRCongo (Vichumbi, Rutshuru), north-western Tanzania, and south-western Kenya (shores of L Victoria south-east to Kisumu, Yala Swamp and Kendu Bay).
 
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status NT
Drainage, burning and over-exploitation of wetlands are the main threats.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Closely related to Yellow-breasted Boubou (Laniarius atroflavus), but the two are better treated as independent species, rather than as a superspecies. Their closest allies are Yellow-crowned Gonolek (Laniarius barbarus) and Black-headed Gonolek (Laniarius erythrogaster), the four constituting a lineage that is sister to the cluster comprising Ethiopian Boubou (Laniarius aethiopicus), Turati's Boubou (Laniarius turatii), Southern Boubou (Laniarius ferrugineus), Swamp Boubou (Laniarius bicolor) and Luhder's Bush-Shrike (Laniarius luehderi).
