Subspecies
May be related to Ashy Drongo (Dicrurus leucophaeus). On mainland, nominate subspecies exhibits decrease in size and reduction in extent of white on abdomen from north to south. However, overlap in individual measurements of wing and tail is c. 50%, and more than that for bill, so that determination of geographical distinctions not possible. Sri Lanka subspecies insularis and leucopygialis intergrade.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
caerulescens (Linnaeus, 1758) - India southern from Haryana and eastern Gujarat, eastern along lower slopes of Himalayas to southern Nepal, and to West Bengal and central Orissa.
insularis (Sharpe, 1877) - Northern and south-eastern Sri Lanka.
leucopygialis Blyth, 1846 - South-western Sri Lanka.
