Subspecies
Rhipidura rufifrons (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993; Christidis and Boles 1994) has been split into Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons) and Arafura Fantail (Rhipidura dryas) by Christidis and Boles (2008) but this treatment is not followed by the BirdLife International.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons).

Forms a superspecies with Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons) and Manus Fantail (Rhipidura semirubra). Often considered conspecific with Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons) and Manus Fantail (Rhipidura semirubra).

The following 11 subspecies are recognised:

  • celebensis Büttikofer, 1892   -  Tanahjampea and Kalao, in Bonerate Is.
  • mimosae Meise, 1929   -  Kalaotoa (east of Kalao).
  • semicollaris Müller, S, 1843   -  Lesser Sundas (Flores, Alor, Wetar, Sawu, Roti, Timor).
  • sumbensis Hartert, 1896   -  Sumba, in southern Lesser Sundas.
  • squamata Müller, S, 1843   -  Western Papuan Is (Waigeo, Salawati, Schildpad, Misool) and Banda Is.
  • henrici E. J. O. Hartert, 1918   -  Southern Moluccas (Seram Laut, Manggur group, Kur, Taam), Kai Is (Kai Kecil) and Aru Is (Babi).
  • elegantula Sharpe, 1879   -  Eastern Lesser Sundas (Romang, Damar, Leti, Moa).
  • reichenowi Finsch, 1901   -  Babar, in extreme eastern Lesser Sundas.
  • hamadryas Sclater, PL, 1883   -  Tanimbar Archipelago.
  • streptophora Ogilvie-Grant, 1911   -  R Mimika, in western New Guinea.
  • dryas Gould, 1843   -  Northern Australia from Collier Bay east, including Melville I, Truant I and Groote Eylandt, to eastern coast of Gulf of Carpentaria. Considered by some as a subspecies of Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons).
