Voice
Single call notes are loud and squeaky with a downward inflection, 'keee-up' or 'queeer'. Song is an excited jumble of chirps and squeaks like the sound of a heavy piece of furniture being rolled on wooden casters.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rusty-bellied Fantail (Rhipidura teysmanni), Tawny-backed Fantail (Rhipidura superflua), Streaky-breasted Fantail (Rhipidura dedemi) and Long-tailed Fantail (Rhipidura opistherythra) and all are part of a species group that also includes Rufous-backed Fantail (Rhipidura rufidorsa), Bismarck Fantail (Rhipidura dahli), Mussau Fantail (Rhipidura matthiae), Malaita Fantail (Rhipidura malaitae), Arafura Fantail (Rhipidura dryas), Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons) and Manus Fantail (Rhipidura semirubra).
