Forms a superspecies with Rusty-bellied Fantail (Rhipidura teysmanni), Streaky-breasted Fantail (Rhipidura dedemi), Long-tailed Fantail (Rhipidura opistherythra) and Palau Fantail (Rhipidura lepida) and all are part of a species group that also includes Rufous-backed Fantail (Rhipidura rufidorsa), Bismarck Fantail (Rhipidura dahli), Mussau Fantail (Rhipidura matthiae), Malaita Fantail (Rhipidura malaitae), Arafura Fantail (Rhipidura dryas), Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons) and Manus Fantail (Rhipidura semirubra).
