Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Tawny-backed Fantail (Rhipidura superflua), Streaky-breasted Fantail (Rhipidura dedemi), Long-tailed Fantail (Rhipidura opistherythra) and Palau Fantail (Rhipidura lepida) and all are part of a species group that also includes Rufous-backed Fantail (Rhipidura rufidorsa), Bismarck Fantail (Rhipidura dahli), Mussau Fantail (Rhipidura matthiae), Malaita Fantail (Rhipidura malaitae), Arafura Fantail (Rhipidura dryas), Rufous Fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons) and Manus Fantail (Rhipidura semirubra). Subspecies coomansi considered indistinguishable from toradja by some authors.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • coomansi Büttikofer, 1892   -  Minahasa Peninsula, in northern Sulawesi.
  • toradja Stresemann, 1931   -  Mountains of central and south-eastern Sulawesi.
  • teysmanni Büttikofer, 1892   -  Mt Lompobattang, in south-western Sulawesi.
  • sulaensis Neumann, 1939   -  Sula Is (Taliabu). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Taliabu Fantail (Rhipidura sulaensis).
