Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status LC
Habitat destruction through logging is the main threat.

Subspecies
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

septentrionalis Rothschild & Hartert, 1916 - Buka I, Bougainville I and extreme western Solomon Is (Shortland Is).
interposita Rothschild & Hartert, 1916 - North-western Solomons (Choiseul, Santa Isabel).
floridana Mayr, 1931 - Florida and Tulagi (east-central Solomons).
cockerelli (Ramsay, 1879) - Guadalcanal.
coultasi Mayr, 1931 - Malaita. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-gorgeted Fantail (Rhipidura coultasi).
lavellae Rothschild & Hartert, 1916 - South-western Solomons (Vella Lavella, Ranongga).
albina Rothschild & Hartert, 1901 - South-western Solomons (Kolombangara, New Georgia, Vangunu, Rendova, Tetepare).
