Subspecies
Formerly referred to as Coracina sykesi. Was in the past sometimes considered conspecific with Black-winged Cuckooshrike (Lalage melaschistos) or Lesser Cuckooshrike (Lalage fimbriata). All are possibly linked also with African Grauer's Cuckooshrike (Ceblepyris graueri) and Madagascan Madagascar Cuckooshrike (Ceblepyris cinereus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

melanoptera (R�ppell, 1839) - North-western India (Himachal Pradesh, northern Uttar Pradesh).
sykesi Strickland, 1844 - Southern Nepal, India (eastern Rajasthan, Gujarat and north-central Uttar Pradesh east to Assam, Nagaland and Manipur, south to Kerala and Tamil Nadu), Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Non-breeding east to western and south-western Myanmar.
