Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 2500 - 9999 (2020) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through logging, agriculture encroachment, urban development, and conversion to oil palm or wood pulp plantations, is the main threat.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Sulawesi Cicadabird (Edolisoma morio), Pale Cicadabird (Edolisoma ceramense) and Black-shouldered Cicadabird (Edolisoma incertum), and all sometimes considered conspecific.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • lecroyae (Parkes, 1971)   -  Luzon, in northern Philippines.
  • elusum (McGregor, 1905)   -  Mindoro (Philippines).
  • ripleyi (Parkes, 1971)   -  Samar, Biliran, Leyte and Bohol.
  • mindanense (Tweeddale, 1879)   -  Southern Philippines (Mindanao and Basilan).
  • everetti Sharpe, 1893   -  Sula Archipelago (Jolo, Lapac, Tawi-Tawi, Bongao), in south-western Philippines.


Similar Species
Blackish Cicadabird (Edolisoma coerulescens) which has uniform colouration and sympatric subspecies of Bar-bellied Cuckooshrike (Coracina striata) which lack extensive black in the underparts (males) and have barred bellies (females).
