Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland, heavily degraded former forest. From 200 - 800 m.

Estimated population is 600 - 700 (2010) and increasing.
Status VU
Habitat loss and degradation through invasive weeds and poor regeneration are the main threats. Predation by introduced mammals may also be a factor.

Mainly large, arboreal arthropods and geckos.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Sometimes placed in a separate genus Coquus. Forms a superspecies with Reunion Cuckooshrike (Lalage newtoni). No other obviously close relatives; plumage similarities (including marked sexual dichromatism and sequence of immature plumages) with Australasian Cicadabird (Edolisoma tenuirostre), Grey-headed Cicadabird (Edolisoma schisticeps) and New Guinea Cicadabird (Edolisoma melas) may indicate either common ancestry or convergence.
