Nest
Untidy, loose, shallow, bowl-shaped, composed of long twigs, lined with rootlets and grass, in a tree about 3 - 14 meters above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
2 or 3; stone-brown to pink-buff with dark brown, red-brown and lilac-grey spots and blotches; oval; about 42 x 30 mm. Incubation: by female.

Subspecies
Subspecies intergrade wherever they abutt.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • plumbea Gould, 1846   -  From south-western western Australia (southern from Geraldton) east, discontinuously, to extreme south-western northern Territory (Petermann Ranges) and western South Australia (Musgrave and Everard Ranges, and in Great Victoria Desert).
  • intermedia Sharpe, 1877   -  South Australia from Ooldea eastern along coast (south of Nullarbor Plain) to Yorke Peninsula.
  • melanoptera Gould, 1846   -  South-eastern South Australia (southern Flinders Ranges south to Fleurieu Peninsula and Mt Lofty Ranges) east to mallee areas of north-western Victoria.
  • halmaturina Mathews, 1912   -  Kangaroo I, off South Australia.
  • versicolor (Latham, 1801)   -  South-eastern New South Wales (from Hunter R) south, inland to western slopes of Great Dividing Range, to western Victoria (Grampians and, on coast, to Port Phillip Bay).
  • arguta Gould, 1846   -  Eastern Tasmania (east of line joining Devonport and Hobart).
