Indonesia (B).

Endemic to the West Papuan islands of Waigeo, Batanta, Gemien and Saonek off north-west Papua.

Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat loss and degradation through logging, hunting are the main threats.

Habits
Tend to call from the canopy. They forage up and down tree trunks.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Genus name sometimes spelt Paradisea. Has been suggested to form a superspecies with Lesser Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea minor), Greater Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea apoda), Raggiana Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea raggiana) and Goldie's Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea decora).
