Subspecies
Intergeneric hybridization with Magnificent Riflebird (Lophorina magnifica) and Lesser Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea minor) recorded.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

melanoleucus (Daudin, 1800) - West Papuan Is (Salawati) and western and southern New Guinea from Vogelkop eastern in northern watershed to Mamberamo R and, in southern watershed, to Port Moresby area and possibly to Milne Bay.
auripennis Schlüter, 1911 - Northern New Guinea from Mamberamo R to Ramu R.
