Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also heavily degraded former forest and rural gardens. From 1,500 - 2,800 m.

Subspecies
Extensive hybridization with Ribbon-tailed Astrapia (Astrapia mayeri), in west of range (from Doma Peaks eastern in narrow zone of altitudinal overlap to Mt Hagen/Mt Giluwe). Subspecies poorly differentiated. Additional proposed subspecies ducalis (described from Dawong, in Herzog Mts) synonymized with nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • feminina Neumann, 1922   -  Schrader Range, Bismarck Range and Sepik-Wahgi Divide, in eastern New Guinea.
  • stephaniae (Finsch, 1885)   -  Doma Peaks, Mt Hagen and Mt Giluwe eastern (including Mt Ialibu, Kubor Range, Mt Karimui, Mt Michael, and Kratke and Herzog Ranges) to south-eastern Owen Stanley Range (Mt Dayman).
