Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Olivaceous Greenlet (Hylophilus olivaceus) and sometimes considered conspecific. Central American subspecies viridiflavus and xuthus differ vocally from South American ones, and may represent a separate species.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
viridiflavus Lawrence, 1861 - South-western Costa Rica and Panama (Caribbean coast around Canal Zone, Pacific coast east to lower R Bayano). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Yellow-green Greenlet (Hylophilus viridiflavus).
xuthus Wetmore, 1957 - Coiba I, off south-western Panama.
flavipes Lafresnaye, 1845 - Northern and western Colombia (Caribbean coast east to Santa Marta, and southern in Magdalena Valley to Huila).
melleus Wetmore, 1941 - Extreme northern Colombia (Macuira Mts, at eastern tip of Guajira Peninsula).
galbanus Wetmore & Phelps Jr, 1956 - Northern and eastern Colombia (eastern Santa Marta and R Rancheria valley east through Guajira Peninsula except eastern tip, and eastern Andes through western Arauca and Casanare to Meta) and north-western Venezuela (western Zulia, Táchira, northern Mérida, Barinas, Portuguesa).
acuticaudus Lawrence, 1865 - Northern Venezuela (eastern Zulia east to Sucre, south to Apure and south-eastern Bolivar. Also Margarita I).
insularis Sclater, PL, 1861 - Tobago I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tobago Greenlet (Hylophilus insularis).
