Subspecies
No subspecies.
Relationships uncertain. May constitute a well-differentiated member of the superspecies formed by Brown Gerygone (Gerygone mouki) and Grey Gerygone (Gerygone igata), presumably following rapid evolution after colonization by a small founder population. Alternatively, may not be a derivative of Grey Gerygone (Gerygone igata) but, instead, the result of an earlier invasion by a gerygone that has since become extinct on the New Zealand mainland.
