Subspecies
Proposed species Gerygone ruficauda, supposedly from north-eastern Australia ("Thirteen Mile River", in eastern Queensland), was based on incorrectly labelled specimens of present species discoloured (faded) by preservative spirit.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • neglecta Wallace, 1865   -  Northern West Papuan Is (Waigeo I), in north-western New Guinea.
  • notata Salvadori, 1878   -  Central and southern West Papuan Is (islands of Batanta and Misool) and north-western New Guinea (Vogelkop).
  • dohertyi Rothschild and E. J. O. Hartert, 1903   -  South-western New Guinea (Onin Peninsula east to Triton Bay).
  • leucothorax Mayr, 1940   -  Lowlands of Geelvink Bay region (western New Guinea).
  • chrysogaster Gray, 1858   -  Yapen I (in Geelvink Bay), north, southern and south-eastern New Guinea, and Aru Is.
