Southern Western Australia (south from c. 23º south in far west) east to South Australia (mainly south of 30º south), New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
 
Southern Queensland to Victoria and South Australia, except north-west, southern Western Australia, north to about Point Cloates, Kangaroo Island and Tasmania.

Nest
Cup-shaped, neat, composed of twigs, grass and fine rootlets, lined with hair, in a low bush or tall grass.
Eggs (Guide)
2 - 4; white with sparse spots and blotches of black, red-black and grey or various shades of red-brown, particularly at the larger end; oval; about 18 x 14 mm. Incubation: 13 - 14 days; by both sexes.
Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 14 - 15 days.

Similar Species
Double-barred Finch (Taeniopygia bichenovii) which has a more robust bill, a double black band acrodd the chest, a black forehead and crown and white spotting on the wings and Banded Whiteface (Aphelocephala nigricincta) which has a short, stubby bill, reddish rump, reddish streaks on the flanks and a thinner black chest band.
