Subspecies
Birds from Waigeo included in nominate subspecies, but sometimes separated as oorti.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- buccoides (Temminck, 1835) - Western Papuan Is (Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati), and north-western New Guinea east to Siriwo R in northern and, in south, to Triton Bay.
- geislerorum A. B. Meyer, 1891 - Yapen I (in Geelvink Bay) and northern New Guinea from Mamberamo R area east to Collingwood Bay area.
- cinnamomeus Mees, 1964 - Southern New Guinea from Mimika R east to upper Fly R and L Kutubu area.
- stonii Sharpe, 1876 - South-eastern New Guinea from upper Purari R (including Karimui, Bomai and Soliabeda areas, in eastern Highlands) eastern along coast to Amazon Bay.
