Habitat destruction and degradation through small and large scale cattle ranching, logging, fires both intentional or accidental, are the main threats.

Voice
Very different from Slaty Bristlefront (Merulaxis ater). Characteristic falling series of musical whistled notes, slightly ascending in the end, of 10-12 seconds duration. Also a semi-musical 'tink'.

Nest
Only one nest has been found (Brazil). A hole in a dirt vertical ledge conatining overhanging vegetation about 1 m above the ground.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Probably forms a superspecies with Slaty Bristlefront (Merulaxis ater) and possibly conspecific, but differs in general size, in proportions of bill and feet, and in vocalizations.
Similar Species
Very similar to Slaty Bristlefront (Merulaxis ater) but no known overlap in range.
