Subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland and shrubland. From 1,200 - 2,950 m.

Voice
A fairly slow monotone trill which drops away slightly at the end. Alarm call is a rapid, dysallabic 'chikchuck'.

Subspecies
Genus differs considerably from other members of family, though shows certain structural similarities with Teledromas. Subspecies pallida, differing vocally from others, is possibly a separate species. Racial affinities of birds from central Bolivian Yungas in Cochabamba uncertain and tentatively included in subspecies argentina.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • maximiliani (D'Orbigny, 1835)   -  Yungas of western Bolivia (La Paz).
  • argentina (Hellmayr, 1907)   -  Central Bolivia (Yungas of Cochabamba, and from western Santa Cruz) southern on Andean slopes to north-western Argentina (south to western Córdoba and northern San Luis).
  • pallida Nores & Yzurieta, 1980   -  South-eastern Bolivia, and lowland Chaco of western Paraguay and northern Argentina (from eastern Formosa south to Córdoba).
