Subspecies
Subspecies subcanescens exhibits distinct vocal differences from other subspecies and is possibly a separate species.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • modesta (Sclater, PL, 1855)   -  Base of eastern Andes of Colombia (southern from Meta).
  • dissors Zimmer, JT, 1934   -  Eastern Colombia in Guainí­a and Vaupés, adjacent southern Venezuela (central and southern Amazonas) and north-western Brazil (from R Negro south to R Solimíµes, apparently also south of Amazon on left bank of lower R Madeira).
  • campanisona (Hermann, 1783)   -  South-eastern Venezuela, the Guianas, and Brazil north of R Amazon (western at least from R Atabaní­, probably from R Negro).
  • signata Zimmer, JT, 1934   -  Eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru north of R Amazon.
  • minor (Taczanowski, 1882)   -  Eastern Peru (south of R Amazon), adjacent western Brazil (east to R Purús) and extreme north-western Bolivia.
  • subcanescens Todd, 1927   -  Brazil south of R Amazon, from R Madeira east to right bank of lower R Tapajós and south to Rondônia.
