South-eastern Brazil in southern Minas Gerais, and from western Paraná east to western Rio de Janeiro and south to extreme eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (Misiones) and northern Rio Grande do Sul.

Subspecies
Was for many years inexplicably considered conspecific with White-browed Antpitta (Hylopezus ochroleucus), but shows striking differences in voice, plumage, habitat and distribution.
