Subspecies
Hylopezus macularius (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Spotted Antpitta (Hylopezus macularius) and Masked Antpitta (Hylopezus auricularis) following SACC (2005).

Formerly considered conspecific with Masked Antpitta (Hylopezus auricularis), but differs distinctly in plumage, voice and habitat. All subspecies differ distinctly in voice, suggesting that they should perhaps be treated as full species.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • macularius (Temminck, 1823)   -  North-eastern Venezuela (Sierra de Imataca), the Guianas, and northern Brazil eastern at least from Manaus and, south of R Amazon, between R Xingú and R Tocantins (Caxiuaní).
  • diversus (J. T. Zimmer, 1934)   -  Southern Venezuela (region around Mt Duida, upper R Orinoco and Caño Casiquiare), south-eastern Colombia (Loretoyacu, in extreme south-eastern Amazonas), and north-eastern Peru north of R Amazon (Iquitos, Puerto Indiana) and also south of R Marañón and west of R Ucayali (Pacaya-Samiria).
  • paraensis (Snethlage, 1910)   -  Brazil along right bank of R Negro (Tomar), on northern bank of R Solimíµes (Codajás) and, south of R Amazon, from left bank of R Madeira east to Belém and south to Rondônia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Snethlage's Antpitta (Hylopezus paraensis).
  • dilutus (Hellmayr, 1910)   -  Extreme south-eastern Colombia to southern Venezuela, southern to north-eastern Peru and north central Brazil (western bank of the Rio Negro).
